Etiopia
At the initiative of “Stomatologii Ajută e.V.” organisation and with the support of Deutsche Apotheker – und Ärztebank, in November 2014 a dental clinic was established in the Selam Children’s Village.
The priorities of the clinic are the care of orphans, children’s village employees and neighborhood residents who do not have access to dental care due to the poor conditions in which they live.
At first we only had a simple treatment unit, which is otherwise used only for travel missions, but in January 2016, an intraoral X-ray device from Germany was also installed.
A great simplification of the treatment processes was carried out in November 2019, when a state-of-the-art treatment unit from the Italian company Copega was installed in the Dental Clinic. It has a suction system, compressor and independent water supply, a privilege given the water scarcity that prevails in Ethiopia. This means that the treatments can be carried out in Selam according to the European standard, thanks to the investment made by the organization “Zahnärzte helfen eV”. and “Ethiopian Children’s Aid SELAM e.V.”
Colleagues from Germany and Romania are welcome to support this work highly appreciated as volunteers.
Sister Sintayehu attends the treatments in the Dental Clinic and has shown a lot of commitment from the very beginning. The purpose of our work is to educate the locals from the point of view of the Aigian buccal. Currently, a cooperation is being established with the dental department of the African College, which was founded in 2018. Students can complete internships at the Dental Clinic and take part in workshops that expand and complement their theoretical knowledge, which is essential due to the shortage of materials in Ethiopia.
The Association “Ethiopische Kinderhilfe SELAM e.V.”, established on February 4, 1995, is a humanitarian aid organization that supports and promotes children and young people in need in Ethiopia.
A significant part of our help goes to the children’s village of Selam in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia’s capital. Selam Children’s Village is a children’s home and training center. Its origins date back to 1985 when Zahai, himself an orphan adopted by the Swiss Röschli family, planned and promoted the construction of an orphanage in Addis Ababa, which opened in 1986.
